  The evolution of Bengali fashion

Fashion is an aspect of a culture, which keeps changing with the evolution of tastes, ones needs, comfort as well as the influence of other cultures. Fashion in Bengal too evolved in its own pace.
The Bengali fashion has always hovered around “Dhotis” for men and “Sarees” for women. In the yester years gentlemen belonging to the upper strata of the society used to wear an additional

unstitched piece of cloth called “Uttorio”,  while the women used a piece of cloth called “Orna” for veiling their head. The “Dhoti” in those days was much smaller in length and breath and it never reached below the knee but the way of arranging it remains the same. The style of wearing the saree was more or less the same as today. The infants in those days used a very short “Dhoti” that could only reach the knee or otherwise wore a tight thigh hugger.

INFLUENCE OF OTHER CULTURES_________________________
Headgear:
After the Turkish invasion we see a significant change in the dress code in Bengal. For quite a long time the Bengali gentlemen were reluctant in wearing any head-gear as they had a special fascination for maintaining their hair but gradually they started to wear them while going to offices and courts. This head-gear sometimes took the form of a turban and sometimes a crown (Taj).

Shoes
In the Bengali society the practice of wearing shoes was in a way
absent. They used to wear wooden sandals called “Kharam”. The Turkish influence introduced the concept of shoes. The middle class people used red leather shoes embroidered with small flowers while the rich got them embroidered

with gold, silver and silk flowers.

Clothing

The rich started wearing the “quaba” and the “Kamiz” or the “Jobba” (Gown). The quaba or the coat was usually long and came down to the ankles. The coat had no arrangement of buttons. A waistband was fastened round the waist to hold the two sides of the garment together. Hindus tied the knot of the waistband on the left and the Muslims on the right. Perhaps the evolution of the “Panjabi” started from this garment called “Quaba”. Apart from the quaba the well-to-do people used to wear the Salwar too. Another garment called the “Angrakha” was used on the Quaba as a jacket.
