Bihu is a harvest and a non religious festival of Assam. It is the national festival of them. Bihu comes three times in a year and marks the change of seasons in the hills and the valleys. Sankranti of Chait or Baisak. (13, 14, 15 April). The original word of Bihu is Vishu in Sanskrit. Rangali, Bhogali and Kangoli are the three Bihus in a year.

Rangoli Bihu is the most festive of all the Bihus. At this time young men and women of Assam look colourful. The farmers celebrate it with songs and dances. Boys and girls from different localities form groups and dance. They dance in the main centre of the town or village and in different localities too. Bihu festival is accompanied by Bihu dance and Bihu geet. The language of these songs is very clear and simple, expressing the emotions of the people. The rhyme and the couplets of these songs are also very interesting.

The men -women both wear the traditional attires of them, these are dhoti and mekhala. One of the special weaves of every home in Assam is ‘gomacha’, a decorated towel with intricate designs woven in. They are given as Bihu presents from a mother to a son, wife to her husband, girl to her father, brother or to a special friend. So this is a symbol or a token of love, care and affection. ‘Japi’ is another integral part of Bihu, it is a decorated hat of the farmers.
