Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan was a versatile genius who, on one hand was a great philosopher and a literateur, while on the other hand he was an excellent orator, statesman and an able administrator. Born on 5th Sept 1888 , he was educated at Lutheran Mission School, Tirupati in between 1896 and1900. |

In1900 he moved to Vellore College where he studied until 1904. In between 1904 and 1908, he completed his B.A. with honors in Philosophy from Madras Christian College. In the meantime, he had studied Sanskrit, Hindi and ancient works such as the Vedas and Upanishads. He joined Provincial Education Service as an assistant professor of Philosophy in the same College from where he did his graduation. |

In between 1918 and 1921, he held the post of Professor of Philosophy in Mysore University. Radhakrishnan's books and articles, drew the attention of Ashutosh Mookerjee, Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University. He nominated Radhakrishnan to the prestigious George V Professor of Philosophy at the Calcutta University, 1921. He was appointed for two terms for the post, between 1921 and 1931 and between 1937 and 1944. He was appointed Vice Chancellor of Andhra University in 1931.In the same year he was knighted. In between 1932 and 1950, he held the prestigious post of Spalding Professor of Eastern Religion and Ethics. He was the first Indian to be appointed Vice Chancellor of Benaras Hindu University. |

His achievements were innumerable and this great son of India became an important figure in the field of education and politics. His birthday, the 5th of September is celebrated as Teachers' Day through out India. This dynamic man passed away on April 16th, 1975 leaving behind a mourning India. |
