He has born 30th September 1922 in Kolkata. He studied science in college and graduated in chemistry. He taught mathematics and science for sometime, but chose to begin working, initially as a cameraman, and then film editor, in B. N. Sircar's New Theatres in Kolkata in the late 1940s. He has begun his career in Mumbai worked with Bimal Roy as film editor and assistant director from 1951, participating in the landmark Roy films Do Bigha Zameen and Devdas. His debut directorial venture, Musafir centering on an old house where three unrelated stories dealing with birth, marriage and death occur in a series, was a disaster, but he persisted and received acclaim for his second film Aanari in 1959. His next film, Anuradha (1960), about an idealistic doctor got him the President's Medal Award. But from then on throughout the 1960s decade, none of Hrishida's films were particularly distinguishable, except Asli-Naqli (1962), Anupama (1966), Aashirwad (1968), and Satyakam (1969). Then Hrishida made what is considered his masterpiece - Anand (1970). Mukherjee's comedy - movies that include "Chupke Chupke," a comedy about a newlywed professor's joke on his pompous brother-in-law, "Golmaal," or "Confusion" - are considered Bollywood classics and are regularly rebroadcast on Indian television. During a prolific fifty years career, which spanned four decades, he directed almost 50 films and also wrote a number of his own films. This man who made such super comedies also directed some of life's most lingering moments of tragic pathos in Anuradha and later its quasi remake Aabhiman. The film, crew and cast won five Filmfare Awards. His films often feature music by Sachin Dev Burman. His films were realistic and unlike the other Bollywood films do not have crime, violence or vulgarity. Few people understood human nature as well as him - in all his films he examined their aspects, particularly their failings and foibles and the outworn values people always seem to hold on to. His plots are simple and contain deeper meaning, but are generally straightforward in form, theme and treatment. His films had wonderful music. His cinemas were always grounded to reality. His films were valued by audiences and critics alike because of their middle-of-the-road accessibility, heart-warming irony and literary sensibilities. His characters inhabited a middle class, urban, educated milieu. His last film was Jhoot Bole Kaua Kaate. He has also directed TV serials like Talaash. |
