THE
DEVIL WEARS PRADA |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Everyone knows that Meryl Streep is the high priestess of drama, but she never gets enough credit for her comedy skills. That should change with The Devil Wears Prada, a sinfully funny, deliciously glossy take on the 2003 best seller by Lauren Weisberger, who denies writing it as a poison-pen letter to her former boss, Vogue editor Anna Wintour. The names have been changed, of course, to ward off lawsuits. Stepping up to the plate as imperious fashion editor Miranda Priestly, Streep knocks every laugh out of the park. More remarkably, she humanizes a character that was little more than a bitch in Manolos on the page. |

Running at a fluffy, fast-paced hour and a half, Prada follows Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway), a recent Northwestern University journalism grad, as she attempts to become a Serious Writer. Having recently moved to New York, she has to lower her entitled, Ivy League standards by landing a job millions of other girls would kill for: working at the elite fashion magazine Runway as the assistant to its demanding editor, Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep). Miranda has Andy perform increasingly impossible errands (like, say, tracking down the unfinished new Harry Potter manuscript for Miranda's twins), and, after a year, would give Andy a glowing recommendation that would help her gain entrance to any magazine she wanted to write at. |

Based on a best selling novel by Lauren Weisberger, director David Frankle’s The Devil Wears Prada takes a pretty funny look at he world of fashion and some of the deeply unfunny stuff that underlies it. |

MIAMI
VICE |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Once again Michael Mann creates an amusing and action-packed action thriller with Miami Vice. As well as staying faithful to the original iconic 80s series, it manages to being a whole new life to the license that changed TV and though may seem to have not got better with time it is still always going to be something special. The film's narrative structure lacks the rhythm and motion that is needed to create a more "compelling" runaway success. |

Michael Mann's beautiful, sleek and cool direction style perfectly suits the mood of Miami Vice. Mann's use of lighting shows marvelous skill and intelligence to excellence of detail. The restriction is very sharp and flows nicely, unlike the film's story, which in places felt dis-joined. The style added a real raw concentration to the film's look and I felt it was very good on the eyes with some of the beautiful scenery, which grabbed my attention. Mann is always an obsessive as visual flare and creating a tense crime film Even though the film is modern it still manages to feel very "80s”. The only feature of Miami Vice is the way it’s been shot. Mann’s camera conjures up the hard, gritty atmosphere of the seamy side of Florida and Central America. Often bleak, sometimes beautiful, the cinematography does what the plot or the action cannot-bring a semblance of coherence to an otherwise mindless and incoherent film. |
