Originally taken from the Pulitzer Prize-winning fiction by Jhumpa Lahiri, The Namesake depicts three decades of Ganguli family. After escaping from a terrible train accident, Ashoke Ganguli (Irfan Khan) decides to marry with energetic vocalist Ashima (Tabu), before the settlement into New York. Gradually Gangulis' son Gogol (Kal Penn) becomes a talented designer, and settles with an American girl (Jacinda Barrett). He desires to be a totally American, but here he meets with some conflicting values with his parents (Irfan Khan, Tabu).

The sensation of Loss is depicted very expressively by Mira Nair, the loss of one's guardians, the loss of one's kids, and the loss of one's spouse. This is a general and everyday life story, of common sentiments and feelings, and it extends over all cultures and all geographical boundaries.

The movie is the final recognition of the central characters - intensely acted by Tabu, Kal Pen, and Irfaan. The characters are excellent: Khan and Tabu make a lovely couple, with a firm support from Sahira Nair. Though, the genuine exposure is Kal Penn, who offers a receptive, multifaceted presentation that is exceptionally attractive. The film is all about impressive direction, dazzling photography which is exceptionally gratifying.
