Based on Mirza Muhammad Hadi Ruswa’s novel, the movie is a saga of Umrao Jaan Ada, a royal courtesan in 19th century Lucknow. Kidnapped and sold at a loving period from a negligible family, Ameeran (Aishwarya Rai), is rechristened as Umrao by the brothel owner Shabana Azmi (Khanum Jaan). In that begins Umrao’s trip into the splendid world of sophistication and style, where her profession is to keep amused royal customers with her dance and lyrical skills.

The locales of Lucknow and talent of direction are great. Choreography by Vaibhavi Merchant is an illustration delicacy.
Displaying the accurate quantity of good posture and gorgeousness, Aishwarya is glittering and realistic in a role formerly essayed by Rekha. Not only are she aesthetically pleasurable, her delicate representation, mannerisms and language - all added to

the charisma of “Umrao Jaan”.

Abhishek Bachchan performs functionally as the noble Nawab Sultan. His personality is immature and his presentation is a slight more than an individual manifestation. His on-screen chemistry with Aishwarya is obvious. Shabana Azmi is as forever perfect. She rises above the deplorable frivolities to field in a well-textured presentation. Exuding snobbishness and self-esteem, Azmi is caste suitably as the majestic priestess. Suniel Shetty provides the much needed laughs. Divya Dutta and Ayesha Jhulka make an impact on as the spirited sisters.

It is not trouble-free to reconstruct olden times on celluloid – be it a book or a film. “Umrao Jaan” has the whole thing going for it: a renowned cast, vigorous performances, and spectacular visuals. But J.P. Dutta’s challenge only partially succeeds.
The movie re celebrates the situation of a female doormat. We could argue the nuances of the film but further than a point the adoration of a woman badly treated by occasion and men also desires to be idea of. The theme of a performer is his advantage. It is the handling that should apprehension a critic. True. Having said this, when the topic and the dealing be related the critic is from time to time right in asking questions a little further than his evident authority.
