Sourav Ganguly | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Sourav Ganguly, the former captain of the Indian Cricket team is considered one of the most dynamic captains of India who is known to have induced the spirit of a fighter in his teammates. Personally an aggressive player, the Prince of Calcutta made his international debut against Australia in India's tour of Australia in 1992. |

Though his talent went unnoticed then his potential as the next Indian tornado was established in India's 1996 tour of England when he scored consecutive centuries in the Test matches he played. Nicknamed as the Bengal Tiger and lovingly called Dada, Sourav Ganguly's tremendous zeal to create a win-win situation has often kept the opponents on the edge and have been held at awe by his teammates. Often called the Lord Snooty by his challengers, he is an insistent player with an appetite for accomplishment, triumph, vindication and retribution. |

Ganguly is the third cricketer to score a century on debut at Lord's, after Harry Graham and John Hampshire. His teammates' admiration for him can be gauged by what Rahul Dravid once remarked, "On the off-side, first there is God, then there is Ganguly”. His accomplishment in the 1999 Cricket World Cup at Taunton against Sri Lanka where he scored 183 is a feat to have been achieved by the only Indian in World Cup Cricket. |

Chosen as the captain within an year, Ganguly scored two centuries in the 2000 champion’s trophy immediately after.He captained India from 2000 to 2005 being the only Indian captain to have the record for the most Test cricket successes. While he achieved significant success as a captain his individual performance deteriorated more so after the successes in the world cup and the tour of Australia in 2003 and the Pakistan series in 2004. |

His indifferent form in 2004 and his subsequent poor form in 2005 led to his being dropped from the team in October 2005. He though remained active and played domestic cricket in the hopes of a recall. Poor performance of the Indian cricket team and his mediocre to good performances in domestic cricket led to his recall to the Indian Test squad in November 2006. |

In the test series of South Africa, though India lost, Sourav Ganguly was the highest run getter for India and the only batsman to have hit a total of 200 runs. He was recalled to play in the ODI tournaments in January 2007, when India played host to West Indies and Sri Lanka. He received the Man of the Series Award in the Sri Lankan series and Sourav Ganguly was named in the World Cup Squad. |
