Dove (Ghughu) There are numerous varieties of doves. Among them the generally seen dove are called Spotted Dove (tile ghughu). This variety of dove is smaller than a pigeon. The body is pinkish with white spots. Loves to stay in any humid region. They are seen mostly in the districts like Maldah, south Dinajpur, Jalpaiguri, Coochbihar and plains of Darjeeling. Their voice sounds like cruw, cruw. They dwell in low branches and bushes and are very
sensitive about their nests. They are not afraid of human and dwells in open spaces as well as near residential areas. Feeds on grains and seeds of grass. Other favourite food is termite. They lay at a time two white eggs throughout the year.
Sparrow (Chorai) Found in city as well as villages. Prefers to live near human dwellings. Mostly they roam in groups. Lay at a time 5 eggs three to four times a year. Builds nest in cracks of roof and walls, holes in old buildings and straw roofs. Sometimes
they fight for their nest. They are slightly bigger in size that of Tuntuni or tailorbird. Male sparrow has a black patch and two white patches on its either side in its neck. Female sparrow is gray in colour. The field sparrow looks almost same besides that they have diagonal stripes in their body except the breast. They search for food dancing all the time. They sounds like 'pipit'.
Common Myna (Shalik) It is a chaos creating bird. If they are disturbed they creates more confusion. Most common found variety is called Bhat Shalik. They stay near residential areas. They search for food in pairs in market places, open field, along roadside, beside railway lines etc. The outer region of wing and tail is generally brown in colour with occasional few white feathers. Beaks are deep yellow in
colour while feets are light yellow in colour. Very alert bird in nature even when feeding on insects or grains. Any approaching figures drove them to fly away. The nest of myna is not at all decorative with twigs, feathers and straws. Their nest can be found in holes of trees and even in cracks of buildings. They lay at a time 4-5 bluish-green eggs.
