Owl
Owls
are nocturnal hunting birds with eyes that face forwards. Owls sleep during
the day and emerge at night to hunt small prey. This eye placement gives
them binocular vision and very precise depth perception. This peculiarity
lends them an appearance of studious intelligence, and now has long been
used as a symbol of wisdom. They have an acute sense of hearing which
also helps in finding meals. Owl's feather tips are split to break |

the
wind flow at the trailing edge of the wings, eliminating even the soft
sound of flowing air to produce absolute silent flying. The diet of owls
consists of toads and frogs, insects, and small birds. Barn Owl (Chouette
Effraie), Eagle Owl (Grand-Duc), Long-eared Owl (Moyen-Duc), Short-Eared
Owl (Hibou de Marais) and Tawny Owl (Chouette Hulotte) are the important
classifications of owls. Owls are found worldwide in a huge range of habitats
from rainforests to grasslands, from wooded areas to tundra. |

Nilkontho
The
bird nilkontho is naming so for its brilliant blue colour body, it is
about the size of a pigeon. They are believed to be near relative of bee
eaters and kingfishers. They are strongly built with a big head, heavy
bill, rufous brown breast, pale blue abdomen and blunt tail. They prefer
open, cultivated green country, and avoid dense forests. |

They
prefer to take insects like, crickets, beetles, grasshoppers and various
pests. They have a
very unique flight style. It has a variety of loud raucous calls and is
particularly noisy and demonstrative during its aerial courtship display.
They built nests on a hallow trunk tree by collecting sticks, straws,
feathers and rubbish. They are usually solitary in nature. It is considered
the most auspicious bird of Orissa. During Durga puja, just before immersion
many household pujas had the tradition to set free the Nilkontho birds
as a messenger towards heaven. |
