Devi Durga Temples - Coochbehar Debi Bari Temple

Devi Durga Temple
Cooch Behar is a large district of West Bengal. It is situated in the northern parts of the state. Debi Bari in Cooch Behar is a tourist destination. It stands tall in the district with its rich history and heritage. The Debi Bari Durga Puja is now a part of folklore, especially in the district of Cooch Behar.

It is more than 500 years old; a staggering fact. The people of Cooch Behar have been associated with this puja, for generations. This being a puja organized by the royal family was still always open for the general people.

History of the Debi Bari temple - In the beginning of the 16th century, Raja Bishwa Singha, along with his brother, planted a tweak of a Mayna tree and started worshipping it. On that very night, Bishwa Singha got an order from Debi Maa in his dream. He obeyed them and started the regular worshipping of Devi Maa. This marked the start of the worshipping of ‘Baro Devi Maa’. Initially this puja had been observed by implanting a twig of Mayna tree in the precinct of Madan Mohan Bari, but Raja Naranarayan initiated to make an idol of ‘Baro Devi Maa’ The image of Durga seen here is completely different from what we are accustomed to. She is not accompanied by her children, here. She is red in colour and is seen to be in a lackluster look. The Asurs looks greenish and is seen to be bitten on the right hand by a lion and bitten by a tiger on the left hand. The height of the image is 11 foot. Jaya and Vijaya accompany the image.

Description of Debi Bari Durga Puja - Puja here begins well before a month and half and it still follows the rituals once followed by the ones who started the Puja. The twig of Mayna tree is being implanted in the courtyard of Madan Mohan Bari and on the day of “Shukla Shashthi”, the twig is being brought to Devi Bari and the ritual of “Mahasnan” is being observed. The puja is being organized by the ‘Devattor Trust’ and it involves a lot of rituals.

The main puja begins after Mahalaya. The hymns of Chandi Paath, muttering sound of ‘Mrityunjoy Mantra and the constant ‘Durga naam jap freshen the surroundings. A fair is also set up during the same time to add to the extravaganza.
The puja starts from the day of Mahasasthi and the ‘Ghat’(pot) gets placed on Mahasaptami. In the past the royals used to fee a Mayna bird and performed Naraboli( human sacrifice). The sacrifice related ritual is still there but buffaloes have replaced human beings there. People from all over Cooch Behar gets involved and bring in their offerings for Devi Maa. A magical ambience is created with the huge number of people chanting ‘Jay Maa’ in the midst of sounds made by the dhaks and conch shells.

The ‘Nishi Pujo’ or ‘Gupto Pujo’ is performed on the dead night of Maha Navami. Only the priests and the royal members are allowed to be present during this Puja.

The Kamsanait family members have been donating bloods on this occasion, since time immemorial. A puppet of human being is sacrificed in the name of Devi Maa.
Bhog is offered to Devi Maa on Mahanavami and on Bijaya Dashami all the married women engage themselves in Sindur-khela.

The idol is subsequently carried to the banks of river Torsha. Before immersion, the Ghaat Pujo or Halwa Puja is being solemnized. A pig is sacrificed and a Bhog is offered to Devi Maa at this juncture. Then Devi Maa is immersed in the water of river Torsha.

This is and old and very special Puja. It abides by the rituals it once had set for the Puja. The common people of Cooch Behar involve themselves with this Puja perfectly and the district becomes a happy place during the Puja days, with the Debi Bari Puja acting as the prime catalyst behind that.

How to reach Cooch Behar Debi Bari- The New Cooch Behar railway station is close to Debi Bari. Trains from most major cities of India run to and fro this station.
Cooch Behar is headquarters of the North Bengal State Transport Corporation, which runs regular bus service to most places in West Bengal, Assam and Bihar.Private buses are also available.
Hired vehicles (cars) are also available and there is quite a busy taxi stand near the Transport Chowpathi.
Cooch Behar has a nairport but currently no flights use it. Bagdogra is the nearest active airport to Cooch Behar, at the moment.
Tours within the town are generally done with the help of cycle rickshaws and Debi Bari can be easily reached with the aid of them.
