stalwarts like Sir S.N. Banerjee who belonged to the moderates. In 1947 he was elected as a member of the legislature from the Calcutta University constituency. On 23rd Jan 1948, he was elected the chief minister of West Bengal. His tenure saw Bengal making tremendous advancements in every sector. New industries came into being; industrial complexes were established along with dream township projects such as Kalyani. Even Salt Lake, the extension of Calcutta was his vision. He set up numerous hospitals and made medical help and advice available to even the remotest parts of Bengal. Described by Pundit Nehru as " a giant among men", Dr. Roy passed away suddenly on his 81st birthday. It was a bolt from the blue to all the people of Bengal. The president of India, Dr. Radhakrishnan and Governor of Bengal, Ms. Naidu was at his bedside within minutes of his death. Dr. Roy was a philanthropist who dreamt of a better Bengal and took up measures to make his dreams come true. His death was a disaster to the people of Bengal who took him as a father figure. He was awarded the "Bharat Ratna", the highest civilian award of the country. |
