The Indian National Flag

The national flag, a symbol of free India, is a horizontal tri-colour of saffron, white and green. The wheel in its centre is a replica of the chakra, which appears on the abacus of Ashoka's pillar. The flag was adopted on July 22,1947 and presented to the nation on August 15, 1947. The colour, saffron stands for courage, sacrifice and renunciation.
White symbolizes, truth and purity-truth in our speech and purity of thought. Green represents life, faith and chivalry. The 24 spokes of the wheel are multiples of 8, representing the noble precepts of the Eight-Fold path, taught by the Buddha. The wheel itself denotes unceasing motion and progress.
  
The Indian National Anthem
Jana Gana Mana is the national anthem of independent India. It was written in highly Sanskritized (Tatsama) Bengali. It is the first of five stanzas of a Brahmo hymn composed and scored by Nobel laureate from Bengal, Rabindranath Tagore who also wrote down the English translation of the song and along with Margaret Cousins.
  
 

It was first sung at the Calcutta Session of the Indian National Congress on 27 December 1911. Jana Gana Mana was officially adopted by the Constituent Assembly as the Indian national anthem on January 24, 1950.

The Celebration

Every year, August 15 is celebrated as the Independence Day in India to commemorate the day India attained independence (August 15, 1947). This national festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm all over the country. On this special occasion, rich tributes are paid to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives and fought to free their motherland from the clutches of the British oppressors. Independence Day is celebrated with flag hoisting ceremonies

and cultural programmes in the capital city of Delhi and all over the country. The main program is held at Delhi’s Red Fort where the Prime Minster unfurls the National Flag and it is saluted by Guns followed by the Prime Minister's speech. Patriotic presentations by school children at the parade ground add colors to the celebrations.
